March 2012- Facebook has acquired 750 patents from computer systems giant IBM, significantly increasing it’s previous number of only 56 patents. The purchase follows management changes and layoffs at Yahoo and a recent lawsuit with Yahoo for patent infringement over 10 of its software patents. Many tech companies are using patents to generate revenue and discourage competition. IBM has been friendly in selling patents to younger tech companies in the past. In January, Google bought 217 patents from IBM including one for a “semantic social network”. Facebook has also applied for an additional 500 patents that could potentially increase their patent profile. Yahoo was scorned by the Tech industry for the Facebook patent suit.
