USDA Food Safety Alerts on Twitter

March 2012- The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has launched Twitter accounts for all 50 states that will share news of recalls on poultry, meat and other foods in those areas.  The state-specific feeds will help consumers more easily identify which recalls are relevant to them. The Twitter alert handle for each state is composed of the state’s two-letter abbreviation followed by “___FSISAlert,” for example Twitter users in Ohio would follow @OH_FSISAlert.

Previously, FSIS alerts were issued through press releases and on the main Twitter account @USDAFoodSafety. “These new Twitter feeds provide yet another mechanism for us to provide consumers with critical updates and relevant information they need to protect their families from foodborne illness. The intimacy of information-sharing through social media is unparalleled, and we believe these timely, targeted updates will better protect public health,” said USDA Secretary for Food Safety Dr. Elisabeth Hagen.

The USDA’s use of social media integration will increase consumer safety by spreading the word to consumers directly affected by the recalls. Will you follow your state’s feed? For more information, please see Mashable.com
