Social Media Privacy for Athletes

February 2012- A bill recently introduced into the Maryland state legislature prohibits institutions “from requiring a student or an applicant for admission to provide access to a personal account to service through an electronic communications device.” -for example: sharing user names, passwords or unblocking private accounts.  Senate Bill 434 would apply to all students but will particularly impact college teams like football and men’s basketball.  “Schools that require their students to turn over their social media user name and/or content are acting as though they are based in China and not in the United States.” For more information, please see
